There are an estimated 420 species in the Aloe genus. However, aloe vera is considered the most biologically active due to the number of potentially active components in the plant including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, and salicylic acids.

Taken orally, aloe vera can help support proper gastrointestinal function. Anthraquinones found in aloe vera are used to create a powerful laxative which assists in the production of intestinal water, mucus secretion, and increased contractions which all help break down food and churn partially digested foods and acid.
